I'm not sure this should even be a beta release yet. First the good news. Graphics: OK; close to MSFS (pretty good for freeware, in other words). Sound: Good, but then flight sims aren't the most complex soundtracks on the planet. Stability: takes a long time to load (about 2 minutes) and appears to be the pizza of death, but after the screen changes resolution and aspect ratio a few times it seems to work reasonably well (is the splash screen supposed to tear up like that?). Now the bad. User interface: horrid. Not just the 'ported-from-UNIX-ugly-but-works' style, I mean pull-down menus that don't do anything except tell you to use an XML editor to edit the preference files (hacking is fun, but shouldn't be mandatory). Major settings like screen resolution and controller options seem to be inaccessable from inside the game. Physics: I managed to roll through the terminal building on a take-off run, did an inverted loop (in a 707!) and flew straight through the ground, which then disappeared leaving only a black dot. For me, detecting collisions with ground objects is a major part of the 'simulation' aspect of any flight sim. Its harder to make a comment on the flight models, since my machine (eMac 700MHz, 32MB nVidia, fine according to the limited system specs on the HTML manual pages) couldn't manage more than about 8 fps (guessing, the fps display didn't seem to work), and the poor UI design meant that changing the settings was too much of a chore*. Installation: 'Drag the FlightGear folder to Applications' say the (rather meagre) installation notes: this I tried, and got a permissions error. Fixed with 'Get Info'. The other problems I can forgive as development issues, but this is just plain carelessness. Found no other relevant documentation on the DMG, just some bible quotes, which were absolutely no use under the circumstances (praying DIDN'T help..). Frankly, if this software is actually used by anyone in the groves of academe doing serious research, I'm never flying again! For now, I'd suggest sticking with Warbirds or X-Plane; they may not be open source, but they work.. *I'm one of those old-fasioned people who believe that computers are supposed to make life less complex and more enjoyable, not the other way around.

Actually, fair enough; it sounds a little surreal. But this was, of course, Flying Toasters, the most famous module in the screensaver app After Dark.
In explaining this to my young cousin, I’d probably first have to explain why screensavers were invented in the first place. Sure, today’s computers still have screensavers, but they’re usually merely decorative (one notable exception being the screensaver I use, BOINC), and no longer required to do the job of “saving screens”. Before flat screens became commonplace, we all used CRTs, hulking great plastic cases enclosing a heavy glass vacuum tube. These worked by directing a stream of electrons—deflected with a system of magnets at the back of the tube—at the front of the screen; when the electrons hit a special phosphor coating, it would cause it to emit photons. In other words, to light up.
A problem that plagued most CRTs, though, was the potential for “burn-in”—that if the same image stayed on screen for long enough, it would persist dimly even after the image changed. Even, in severe cases, when the monitor was switched off. I’ve seen some ATMs that still use CRTs even today, and which have images—often multiple, overlaid images—burned into their screens.

That was the problem a screensaver was designed to prevent; after a period of inactivity, they’d trigger and show ever-shifting designs, and by ensuring your screen didn’t persist in displaying the same image for hours—even just the menu bar at the top of your screen, with “ File Edit ” and so on permanently showing—you could stave off burn-in. LCDs don’t work in the same way, and are so much less likely to suffer from burn-in—though it’s not unheard-of.
That, then, is where the general idea of a screensaver came from, but what about those flying toasters? Here’s how one of the original After Dark engineers, Jack Eastman, tells the tale, in an interview on Low End Mac: “My wife’s a doctor—she was doing her residency then and was frequently gone overnight. So I’d sit up late programming. Very late.“One of those late nights I was thinking about the artistry problem—how to do something really fun for 2.0. I was wandering around the house. That would appear to be that—a surreal flight of fancy brought on by sleep deprivation. We’ve all done it. In 1994, though, the band Jefferson Airplane sued After Dark’s company, Berkeley Systems, claiming that the flying toasters were a copy of those featured on the cover of its 1973 album Thirty Seconds Over Winterland. The band lost the case, though, because although there’s no argument the album came out long before the screensaver, Berkeley claimed it wasn’t aware of it—and the judge noted that the band hadn’t trademarked the album artwork.
Regardless of the inspiration, there’s no doubt that the Flying Toasters screensaver is iconic, and if you want to run it on your Mac today, it’s actually really easy. Alternatively, for the princely sum of four bucks, you can buy a version that actually runs as a proper OS X screen saver module, and it works fine even in Yosemite. It might not have the specific retro look of those web reconstructions, but it’s nevertheless terrific fun—even if not quite as much fun as this line from its original 2002 press release suggests: “The Flying Toaster module in particular will provide hours of enjoyment, with the toasters going through more than 55 different routines against the backdrop of the space.”
